The College Counseling department is seeking an experienced College Counselor to join our team for the beginning on August 23, 2021 for the 2021-2022 academic year on a part-time basis with the anticipation of a full-time schedule from October through January.  Under the direction of the Director of College Counseling, the College Counselor will work closely with students to guide them through the college search and application process and help them shape the best possible college match.


This is a one-year position.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Counsel students and parents, individually and in groups through all aspects of the college application and admission process and about individual college choices.
  • Understand the college admission process at a variety of institution types and selectivity levels; keep abreast of trends and changes in college admissions, higher education, and standardized testing.
  • Assist the Director and Associate Director in writing official school counselor recommendations.
  • Join the College Counseling team in addressing small or large gatherings of parents and/or students to discuss the admission and application process.
  • Co-teach college counseling seminars and co-present various programs to faculty, parents, prospective families and other constituent groups.
  • Assist students with course registration for their senior year.
  • Meet with college admissions representatives who visit AIS both virtually and in-person; facilitate meetings between representatives and AIS students.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Successful candidates will posses: 

  • Bachelor's degree and 3 to 5 years of experience in college admission and/or college counseling or an equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Strong counseling skills in the context of an empathetic understanding of family dynamics; ability to maintain confidentiality/need-to-know protocols 
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. colleges/universities, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and procedures
  • Effective interpersonal, decision-making and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Exceptional writing and public speaking skills
  • Familiarity with objectives and mission of an independent college preparatory schools
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel Spreadsheets, Adobe Acrobat, Naviance, 
  • Ability and willingness to work some evenings as required
